AMERICAN CHERRY

Cinemavixion Review

Marcella Cytrynowicz's "American Cherry" (2023) delves into the darker corners of small-town romance, presenting a narrative that charts a course from infatuation to perilous obsession. The film, which garnered 26 wins and 24 nominations, explores the volatile relationship between a troubled young boy and an impressionable girl, set against a backdrop of socioeconomic struggle. As their romance blossoms, his protective instincts warp into a consuming fixation, leading to dire consequences. The story is framed by a video diary, a confessional tool that lays bare the intricate layers of love, burgeoning mental illness, and the tragic outcomes when these afflictions are left untreated. While the film's IMDb rating stands at 4.8/10, its critical reception suggests a compelling, albeit intense, exploration of psychological turmoil and the destructive nature of unchecked obsession within a seemingly idyllic setting.
