ALICE: THE DARKER SIDE OF THE MIRROR

Cinemavixion Review

Zach Hamer's "Alice: The Darker Side of the Mirror" offers a disquieting departure from the traditional Alice narrative, transporting viewers to a grim 1905 Pacific Northwest. This reimagining eschews whimsical fantasy for a potent psychological horror, plunging a teenage Alice into a disturbing reflection of reality. The film masterfully crafts a nightmarish landscape populated by unsettling figures from early 20th-century America, transforming the familiar Wonderland into a crucible of existential dread. Selena Tibert delivers a compelling performance as Alice, navigating this twisted realm with a palpable sense of vulnerability and growing unease. The direction by Hamer is assured, leaning into surrealism and a haunting atmosphere that blurs the lines between dreams and nightmares. Exploring themes of madness, fractured identity, and the brutal loss of innocence, "Alice: The Darker Side of the Mirror" is a challenging and memorable journey into the darker recesses of the human psyche, proving that even beloved tales can be recontextualized into chilling cinematic experiences.
