AILEEN: LIFE AND DEATH OF A SERIAL KILLER

Cinemavixion Review

Nick Broomfield's "Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer" offers a chilling and profoundly unsettling look into the fractured psyche of Aileen Wuornos, a woman whose name became synonymous with a brutal killing spree. This follow-up to his earlier work delves deeper, capturing Wuornos in the throes of mental deterioration as her execution looms. Broomfield masterfully interweaves his own interviews with courtroom footage, presenting a complex portrait that challenges simplistic notions of guilt and sanity. The film is a stark examination of a justice system grappling with the definition of mental competence, questioning whether the state is prepared to execute an individual whose mind is demonstrably not sound. With a critical reception that highlights its disturbing effectiveness, this documentary serves as a powerful, albeit grim, testament to the complexities of human nature and the fallibility of justice.
