AFTERSHOCK

Cinemavixion Review

Nicolás López's 2012 thriller "Aftershock" plunges viewers into a harrowing fight for survival when a catastrophic earthquake strikes a Chilean nightclub. While the initial premise suggests a disaster film, the narrative takes a sharp, brutal turn as the survivors discover that the seismic event has also freed inmates from a nearby collapsed prison. What follows is a relentless descent into chaos, where the terror of natural disaster is eclipsed by the primal fear of man-made monstrosity. Eli Roth, who also co-wrote the screenplay, delivers a chilling performance as one of the escaped convicts, embodying the film's grim exploration of humanity pushed to its extreme. Despite a mixed critical reception, with Rotten Tomatoes noting 42% positive reviews, "Aftershock" offers a visceral and unsparing depiction of societal breakdown, making it a compelling, albeit disturbing, watch for those seeking intense genre cinema.
