AFFAIRS OF CAPPY RICKS

Cinemavixion Review

Ralph Staub's "Affairs of Cappy Ricks" offers a charming glimpse into 1930s American cinema, anchored by a robust performance from Walter Brennan as the titular sea captain. Upon returning from a lengthy voyage, Cappy Ricks finds his domestic and professional life in disarray. His daughter's impending marriage to an unsuitable suitor and the machinations of her formidable mother-in-law threaten to upend his world and his business. Brennan embodies the gruff yet lovable Cappy with seasoned skill, navigating the comedic and dramatic currents of a plot that pits tradition against encroaching modernity. The film, while perhaps quaint by today's standards, succeeds in its portrayal of familial duty and the resistance to change, making for an engaging, if light, cinematic experience.
