Cinemavixion Review

Director X's "Across the Line" (2015) is a potent drama that delves into the intersection of athletic ambition and societal prejudice. Starring Stephan James as Mattie, a promising hockey player drafted by a top NHL team, the film navigates the treacherous waters of racial tension within his school and community. James delivers a compelling performance, capturing the character's struggle to maintain his focus amidst external pressures. He is ably supported by Sarah Jeffery as Jayme, a young woman grappling with her own identity, and Shamier Anderson, whose portrayal of Mattie's hustling brother adds a layer of complex familial dynamics. The narrative, while focusing on Mattie's journey, effectively highlights the corrosive impact of racial divides. Praised for its strong performances and relevant themes, "Across the Line" earned 7 wins and 1 nomination, with Rotten Tomatoes noting an 83% approval rating. It's a film that resonates with its exploration of dreams deferred and the fight for equality on and off the ice.
