A HERO AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT A SANDWICH

Cinemavixion Review

Ralph Nelson's 1978 drama, 'A Hero Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich,' offers a stark and unflinching look at the devastating impact of heroin addiction within an urban community. The film centers on a young ghetto boy, portrayed with compelling vulnerability by Larry B. Scott, whose descent into drug dependency becomes a harrowing battle for survival. Cicely Tyson delivers a powerful performance as his mother, embodying a fierce maternal love and desperate resolve to save her son. Paul Winfield complements her as the foster father, providing a grounded presence and a source of support in their fight against the addiction that threatens to consume their family. The narrative navigates the complexities of the struggle, highlighting the societal pressures and personal demons that contribute to the crisis. Despite its difficult subject matter, the film is a poignant testament to the strength of family and the enduring hope for recovery.
