A CRIME OF HATE | THE HORRIFIC "CORRECTIVE" PUNISHMENT FOR BEING A LESBIAN IN SOUTH AFRICA

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary plunges into the harrowing reality of "corrective" rape in South Africa, a brutal phenomenon targeting lesbian women. At its core is the indomitable spirit of Funeka Soldaat, a black lesbian activist whose personal survival of a horrific attack fuels her mission. The film unflinchingly portrays the devastating consequences of this violence, a grim punishment aimed at "correcting" sexuality, often culminating in murder. Soldaat's resilience shines through as she channels her trauma into establishing the NGO Free Gender, offering a beacon of hope and support for survivors. This powerful narrative is a crucial, albeit difficult, watch, shedding light on an underreported crisis and celebrating the courage of those who fight against it.
