Adam Graveley's directorial debut, "3rd Night" (2017), plunges viewers into the unsettling quietude of the Australian bushland, a setting that quickly transforms from a bucolic escape into a crucible of psychological terror. The film follows a young couple seeking solace from urban chaos in a secluded apple orchard, only to find their idyllic retreat invaded by an unseen, malevolent presence dubbed "the Watcher." What commences as subtle unease and escalating paranoia soon morphs into a desperate fight for survival. Graveley, who also penned the script and stars in the film alongside Jesse McGinn, Robert Hartburn, and Bruce Denny, masterfully crafts an atmosphere of dread. The narrative, unfolding over the titular three nights, meticulously explores the primal fear of being observed and the suffocating weight of isolation. As the couple attempts to unmask their tormentor, they are compelled to confront the land's buried secrets and the chilling realization that their sanctuary has become a prison. "3rd Night" is a stark, effective horror that thrives on its claustrophobic tension and the unsettling realization that help is a distant, unheard scream away.
