A commanding presence in Hollywood, Sig Ruman excelled as the quintessential pompous bureaucrat and arrogant authority figure, lending his talents to both comedy and drama. A German émigré, he found significant favor with the Marx Brothers, memorably portraying the opera owner Herman Gottlieb in 'A Night at the Opera' and a rival doctor in 'A Day at the Races.'
